Standing with Myanmar: EXO’s commitment to our team

A personal message from Hamish on why EXO will stop taking new Myanmar bookings until further notice.

EXO Travel has been present in Myanmar since 1994, making us one of the longest established DMCs in the country. EXO Myanmar was the second EXO destination. opening just a year after our inception as Exotissimo in Vietnam.

My first visit to Myanmar was in 1992, just as the country was first experimenting with opening for tourism. I will never forget the thrill of visiting somewhere that offered such a rich, extraordinary experience, like nowhere I’d been before. Myanmar, for me then, captured the essence of Southeast Asia’s culture, history, and untouched beauty, along with the mysterious charm of a place that remained largely unexplored and unseen by many.  Over the years I have travelled to Myanmar many, many times and never lost that thrill.

We’ve always been conscious of the political complexities in Myanmar. However, at EXO we believe that to truly appreciate the world, it must be experienced firsthand.

We remain convinced of the transformative power of travel to dismantle barriers and cultivate mutual understanding. The advantages of fostering human connections, enhancing cultural awareness, and nurturing compassion, alongside promoting a sense of global community, make navigating these challenges worthwhile.

Over the last 29-years we have facilitated travel to Myanmar for over 200,000 guests. We see ourselves as pioneers in the tourism sector in Myanmar, having explored almost every hidden corner of the golden land. We have developed friendships with communities high in the mountains and deep in the delta and played our part in opening the country to the international community.

We are convinced of the transformative power of travel to dismantle barriers, cultivate understanding, nurture compassion and promote a global sense of community’

We’ve weathered natural disasters, pandemics and political upheaval, always mindful of where the money goes, and proactively engaging with local communities to ensure people inside the destination benefit in ways that are respectful and ethical.

We have employed, trained and provided work for  thousands of local people as staff at EXO Myanmar and as guides, drivers or indirectly through the business we have brought to the tourism sector.

Through it all, the highs and the lows, the EXO Myanmar family has stood strong and resilient. We have done extensive work to support local economies and through the EXO Foundation we have directly funded many local projects and initiatives.

We are very proud of our track record and accomplishments  and despite numerous challenges and uncertainties, until now  have remained fully committed to promoting tourism to Myanmar.

Sadly, events over the last few years following the 2021 coup have now forced us to take the difficult decision to put a temporary pause on taking bookings for Myanmar from now until the situation improves and we believe it is safe for travellers to return.

‘Although we will not be accepting new bookings, EXO Myanmar will remain open and we will continue to take care of our staff and all other responsibilities’

While we are deeply saddened to take this step, our priority has always been the safety and well-being of our team, guides, and travellers. Although we will not be operating any tours or taking new bookings, we are not closing down. EXO Myanmar will remain open and we will continue to take care of our staff and all other responsibilities. EXO Foundation will continue to be active in Myanmar and we will do as much as we can to support our people.

We have made sure all our team in Myanmar are able to take remote working roles within the EXO network for other destinations. We have integrated Myanmar staff into our Thailand, Korea and Singaporean sales departments, bolstering their experience with inspection trips and training.  Members of our Myanmar team have also played pivotal roles in laying the foundations of our Saudi Arabia and Korea offices. Combined with their expertise, deep knowledge of the travel industry and EXO’s partners plus their passion, they have confidently embraced the challenge and been a huge support to the greater EXO family.

Even during this difficult time, we remain steadfast in our support for the people of Myanmar and fully committed to promoting and booking travel to Myanmar just as soon as we can. We stand in solidarity with the people of Myanmar, holding onto hope for a brighter future where we can once again explore and celebrate the beauty of this remarkable country together. When the time is right, EXO will be ready to welcome guests back to the Golden Land.
